Mr Ellis - Beekeeper

Our theme this year at school is flying high.  In keeping with that theme one of our inquiries this term has been all about bees.  Today we were lucky enough to get a visit from Mr Ellis, who is a professional beekeeper.  We practised our note-taking skills while listening, and asking questions. Tomorrow we will write our own reports from the notes we've taken.

Matariki inquiry 13-24th June

For the last two weeks we have been learning about Matariki.  This is a special time of year when we begin to see the Matariki star cluster (part of the Taurus constellation) again, just before dawn. Traditionally Maori saw this as a time for harvesting root vegetables, planting winter crops, sharing meals with extended whanau, making kites and other woven items.
For the last two days we have been preparing vegetable soup with Miss Olney and today Jaydene showed us how to make Fry Bread.  In accordance with Maori tikanga (protocol) we said karakia before sharing our soup and bread with our class and some of the other staff at Hurupaki.

Molly and Kate's Performance

Molly and Kate study traditional Scottish Highland dancing.  They performed for us this afternoon.
The girls also brought the medals they won at a recent competition.

Road safety training 10th May

Constable Mario talked to us about road safety.
We then had to do a quiz which asked general
questions about riding bikes on or near the road.

We then went out to practice a course on the bikes

Constable Ian explained the M check - parts
of the bike that need to be maintained or checked
before going out for a ride.

Our new collaborative learning environment

Welome to TOP Pod

There are a variety of spaces in our classroom
where we can work on our own or in groups.
This year we have BYOD.
We also have i-pads and apple laptops.
The expectation is that move, talk
and work quietly in our Pod
